    A night at the gates of the palace of Cambalù. The moon high over the cedars, incense smoke rising slow through the silence of the gardens.

    Juniper, black pepper and incense open cold and resinous. Cedarwood, birch and wormwood deepen into the dark, before fir balsam, labdanum and amber settle in — slow and hypnotic.

    Cambalù is today's Beijing — Khanbaliq, the capital of Kublai Khan, the end of the road in the Milione, the court that received Marco Polo.
